Helpful starts with clear boundaries.

Your local data

The desktop launcher stores settings and data in ~/.youbot-desktop. The CLI installation uses ~/.youbot. Keep the relevant data folder when updating the project, and back it up securely.

External services

Self-hosting does not mean every piece of data stays on your computer. Online AI providers receive requests, messaging services transport conversations, and connected tools communicate with their services. The public relay handles visitor messages and conversation history. Depending on its deployment, it uses temporary memory or a configured Firestore database. Review the relay operator’s storage and retention settings before sharing sensitive information.

Permissions and approvals

Review your concierge’s tools, connections and approval settings before sharing it. Check requests that need your attention in the owner dashboard, and take over a conversation when a personal response is more appropriate.

Protect credentials

Keep configuration, API keys, bot tokens and owner links private. Review logs before sharing them for help. Do not expose your owner dashboard to the public internet without an appropriate access and security setup.

Backups and updates

Stop Youbot before taking a consistent local backup. Protect backups as private data. Record which installation method you use, and keep its data folder separate from the downloaded source or release folder.
